NEW! Text-to-Speech Software for the Blind
The Libraries Deanship recently purchased IBSAR from Sakhr Software – an Arabic/English Text-to-Speech software for the blind and visually impaired. IBSAR is able to convert text to audio using library PCs (headphones required), or onto MP3 audio devices for listening on the go. An additional feature is the OCR scanning component, which reads “scanned” printed documents and images and translates them into electronic files that are able to be edited.

Public Services staff at the Main Campus and Zayed Libraries are available to assist blind and visually impaired University students and faculty, as well as the General Community, in the use of IBSAR for their research and curriculum needs, especially for use with library and other online materials. IBSAR software (on USB drive) may be checked out by users from the Reference Desk at Zayed Library or the Reference/Circulation Desks at the Main Library, by presenting their University or picture ID, and used in the library at select computers.

Through this service, the Libraries Deanship continues to support the Disability Support Services Center in their aim to address the requirements of students with special needs, to ensure they “have access to educational opportunities equal to their fellow students.” In addition, the Libraries Deanship actively supports Universal Design that allows ALL users self-sufficiency in access to and use of library resources, services and facilities.
